Why Prevent Zika?
Many people infected with Zika won’t have symptoms or will only have mild symptoms. However, a pregnant woman, even one without symptoms, can pass Zika to her developing fetus. Zika infection during pregnancy can cause serious birth defects such as microcephaly, a condition that results in babies born with limited brain development. Some studies have also shown slowing of brain functions in adults with Zika infection.
Pregnant women should not travel to these countries: Americas, Caribbean, Mexico, Pacific Islands.
(These countries have had outbreaks of Zika virus)
